Aural Examples
Think of the hosts as the writers and the guest as the source material. At the beginning you hear the hosts start to talk over the guest. This is to shorten her story, but to provide enough information so that the audience doesn't get lost. This is SUMMARY. One host, Robert Krulwich, often will ask additional questions of the guest. This is for the sake of the audience. This can show students the importance of thinking about moments of confusion so they can be prevented. You can hear the hosts provide SPACE and TIME transitions so that the audience can follow the action of the narrative. Consider how the sound effect provides definition of visual echolalia. Students need to define terms for the audience. Notice the pause after "This man doesn't have language." This can show students the power of a paragraph break. Question for our hour. The preceding narrative was used in order to orient the audience toward the questions that the program will attempt to answer. 5:17 You can hear the host introduce the quote. Jad: So she's wondering. Susan: What have you been doing for 27 years? There is a musical pause after "I'm going to ignore him." As the story progresses, there are musical tone shifts. Students can look at how the syntax and diction changes with the musical shifts. At the end of Susan Schaller's story, the hosts begin to transition to the next idea, identifying the source and his credentials. |
TranscriptJAD ABUMRAD: His eyes grew wider, she says, and then wider. And then-- SUSAN SCHALLER: He slaps his hands on the table. “Oh! Everything has a name!” (Music.) SUSAN SCHALLER: And he looks at me in this demanding way and I sign table. And he points to the door and I sign door. And he points to the clock and he points to me, and I sign “Susan.” And then, he started crying. He just collapsed and he started crying. (Music.) SUSAN SCHALLER: What is it that happens in human beings when we get symbols and we start trading symbols? It changes our thinking. It changes our ideas of—it is no longer the thing, a table that we eat on but there's something about symbol table that makes the table look different. Ildefonso was in love. He was in love.
